Sometimes a toddler will have a hard time adjusting to their new living arrangements when you bring a new baby home. It is best to have a plan before the due date and start preparing her right away. Here are a few ways to get your toddler prepared for the new baby.
1. Give your toddler a lot of baby dolls. Play with your toddler with the baby dolls and do not let him or her play with the baby doll, as he or she would play with her regular toys (i.e. biting it, dropping it, dragging it, etc). Realistic baby dolls work best and for boys it is best to get a boy baby doll, even if you are having a girl.

2. Start getting your toddler used to being a little more independent. Let him or her play alone for longer than you used to. It is good to still spend a lot of them when them, just not as much as normal. You will need plenty of time to take care of the new baby, so the more time your toddler spends alone (in a SAFE place), the better.
3. If your toddler still sucks the bottle or pacifier, it is a good idea to break that habit. The toddler will be tempted to steal those items from the baby if he still uses them. Disciplining your toddler for taking those items may cause your toddler to dislike the new baby.
4. It will save you a lot of hassle if you can potty train your toddler before the new baby arrives. Start letting your toddler watch the parents use the bathroom (censored of course). They will soon get a sense of why the toilet is used. The potty should be in or near the bathroom. Be sure to watch your child while he or she is on the potty because a bathroom is not a good place for a toddler to be alone.
5. Teach your toddler how to play games that you will be playing with the new baby. If your toddler knows games like "Peek-a-boo," "where's the baby?" or any other game, then the toddler can participate when you play with your new baby.
It is a good idea to start all of these steps five months or more before the new baby comes because it will take a while for your toddler to know all he or she needs to know. Following these steps will make the new baby arrival go much smoother.
